Sub Sixers sent out at least 838 submissions in 2013. And 409 of those submissions were picture book manuscripts.
Welcome to the “Sub Six” picture book submission support group introduction page.
The Sub Six focus is supporting each other as we work toward our submission goals. Last year, we set out to submit a manuscript every other month, with the result being six submitted manuscripts for each member by the end of the year. However, many of the members surpassed that number in a few months. So, we just support each other. We ask questions, share news, share concerns, ask for help, and so on. We also have a new Sub Six series: ALL ABOUT SUBMISSIONS. In the group, I post a submission tally sheet doc each month. Many members add their submissions to the tally sheet as they go along, others add their submissions at the end of the month. For many of us, having that accountability of documenting our progress is helpful in keeping us motivated. Seeing what the other members are accomplishing is also encouraging. We also have a doc with members’ blog and web addresses. We have a doc where members can post query letters or cover letters that they might want other members to critique. Around the second week of each month, I tally up the group’s subs from the previous month and post our progress on our Facebook page. So far, we have not had any competitions, but we do have a monthly drawing for a prize. In 2013, our small group sent out a total of 838 kid lit submissions – 409 of them were picture book manuscripts. Please contact me if you have questions. Sub Six is a closed Facebook group. If you would like to join, you can either friend me, Alayne Kay Christian, on Facebook with a message mentioning Sub Six, leave a comment on this blog page, or go to Facebook and ask to join on the Sub Six page.

I am interested in joining your Facebook group
Kathy, I would love it if you join Sub Six. If you haven’t done it yet, would you mind sending me a FB friend request. I’m just learning all this technology stuff, and it seems that this is the easiest way for me to add you to the group. I am looking forward to getting to know you as we support each other in achieving our common goals. I’ll get you added as soon as we are linked on FB. Thanks!
Hi Alayne,
Sounds like a good idea. I just finished PiBoIdMo and ready to start 12×12. I think you can’t have enough support, so would love to join here as well. I have also send you a friend request on fb. 😉
Yvonne
This is so exciting. I am happy that you will be joining us in Sub Six. I’ve been working on blog stuff all morning. Next is FB. Thanks for sending the friend request. I will get you added to the group shortly. Thanks!
I’m interested Alayne. Let me know how to join. I’ll log in here with my FB profile.
Great, Stacy. So happy to have you join Sub Six. I think we are going to have great group. I sent you a friend request, and I will add you to the group once you accept.
Hi Alayne! I’m interested in joining. (not sure if I can do it, but I’m up for a challenge)
I had to laugh, Jennifer because I’m not sure if I can do it, but obviously I am up for the challenge. I would love to have you join Sub Six. I have added you to the group. I will be asking everyone to introduce themselves. If you want to get a jump on it feel free.
I feel much better now that you said that. I’ll bounce over and introduce a little about me. Thanks for adding me.
Thanks for getting the ball rolling, Jennifer.
Hi Alayne!
I have not had luck with other groups, mainly because they were posting every two weeks or so. It was overwhelming. Every other month I could manage. If you still have room, I would love to join you! I am a PiBoIdMo and 12×12 challenger…
I think we will be communicating with each other via FB all along. I hope that won’t be bothersome to you. This is a flexible group, so if you choose to only post when you submit a manuscript, that will work. We will be there to celbrate and cheer you on. I am glad you joined us.
I would like to join. I have a picture book series on the back burner for a l.o.n.g time. I would like support to finish it and see it through. That is if you will accept and have room. Thanks
Hi Michelle, I would love to have you join Sub Six. And I would love to see you get those l.o.n.g time picture books off that back burner. If you are able to send me a friend request on FB Alayne Kay Christian (don’t forget the Kay) I will get you added to the group right away. I’m looking forward to getting to know you.
I want to join! Subbing six is a great goal for next year. How do I join the FB group?
Hi Julie, I didn’t see your comment when I checked earlier. I sent you a friend request on FB. Once you accept, I can add you to the group. I am so thrilled that you will be a part of Sub Six. I look forward to supporting each other in our common goals.

I just sent a request to join through Facebook. I loved PiBoIdMo and can’t wait to keep my writing momentum going. It’s so important to have peers in this “alone at my desk” business. Thanks for organizing!
Hi Laura, I have added you to the Sub Six group. I’m glad that you decided to join us. I look forward to watching you turn those PiBoIdMo ideas into stories that you submit.
I would love to join your Sub Six group! I heard about it on Marcie Atkins’ blog today. I tend to move on to the next shiny new idea without subbing what I’ve finished, polished etc. I think writing coverletters is what is also holding me back abt subbing.
I have added you as a member. Thanks for joining Sub Six. The cover letter seems to be a common obstacle. I think I will post about that on the group page. I look forward to getting to know you.
Hi Alayne,
What a GREAT idea! I’d like to hop on board the subsix group…from reading the above comments, it sounds like I will be in VERY good company. 🙂 I did PiBoIdMo, 12×12, PPBF every Friday all year and I have a couple of pb’s ready to submit. I know I need the support and encouragement.
So glad you will be joining us Sub Sixers, Vivian. I will get you added as a member. Please stop by to introduce yourself and meet the other members. I look forward to getting to know you and watch your submission successes.

I’ll get you added right away, Diane.
Hi! I just came across your blog through 12 X 12 and I’d love to join your Sub Six group. I have a couple I’m almost ready to submit and hope to have more as the year goes along. 🙂

Alayne, Hello.
I found Sub Six thru fb (Marcie from Hollins.)
This is scary.So,I’m in!
If there is still room, can you please add me to the group.
Congratulations on your published p.b. about the love of grandparents & grandchildren!
I look forward to saying hello on the fb site later.
many thanks & HNY!
Hi Jan, Thanks for the congrats on BUTTERFLY KISSES FOR GRANDMA AND GRANDPA. I am so happy you found Sub Six, thanks to Marcie. And I am excited that you will be joining us in our common goal of submitting six picture book manuscripts in 2013. I haven’t been over to FB, but I will get over there and add you as a member to Sub Six.
I’d love to join. Count me in!
Kristy
Hi Kristy,
How did you hear about Sub Six?
The grads of Hollins’ MA in Children’s Lit program have a Facebook page. Someone had posted it there and I thought it sounded very encouraging. I’ve always focused on the study of kids books, so attempting to write them will be new for me!
Thanks, Kristy. I’m glad you found Sub Six on the Hollin’s FB page. And I am thrilled that you would like to join us! I wanted to make sure your original request was not spam. WordPress does a super job of finding spam, but I thought one might have slipped through. Sub Six is a Facebook group. The easiest way to add you as a member is for you to send me a friend request. If you decide to do that, make sure you send the request to Alayne Kay Christian (using the middle name Kay). As soon as I get the request, I’ll add you as a member. I look forward to getting to know you as we work together in Sub Six.
Thanks for joining me on the Facebook page Alayne, I am looking forward to constructive year!

What a great way to dovetail with the 12×12–not just write them, but get those ms out the door! I’d love to join y’all.
My experience with 12 x 12 is why I started the group, Wendy. I did two years of the Picture Book Marathon 2010 & 2011, I completed 12 x 12 in 2012, and I completed PiBoIdMo (Picture Book Idea Month) in 2012. So, I had so many manuscripts written with tons of ideas waiting in the wings. I realized I was doing a lot of writing, but not much submitting. Once I set a goal to polish and submit at least six PB in 2013, I thought it would be nice to have support and be able to support others in the same goal. And here we are. I’m so glad you want to join us in the fun. I will get you added as a member right away.
I’m participating in 12 x 12 after having completed PiBoIdMo. Do you have any room left? Thank you.
Yes, we have room, Lori. The more the merrier 🙂 I have accepted your friend request, and I will get you added as a member right away.
I’d like to join your sub six FB group, Alayne.
I am so happy that you want to join us. I would be happy to add you as a member to the Sub Six Group, Romelle. I have sent you a FB friend request, once you accept, I will add you. Thanks!
Looks like fun! I’d love to join! Thank you!
Warmly,
Rebecca
It would be great to have you join us in Sub Six, Rebecca. How did you hear about it?
Hi. I’d like to join if you’re still open to new members! I could not find a place on the FB page to respond/request. Sounds like great support and inspiration. I’m a 12×12 er.
There’s always room for more! So glad you want to join. I have added you as a member, so come on by.

Hi Alayne! I’m ready to sign up for Sub Six if you are still accepting new members. This will be part of my 2014 writing goals. 🙂
That’s great Martha. We’ll be glad to have you join us in 2014. I sent you a Facebook friend request. If you are comfortable accepting the request, I will get you added to the group right away. If you are not comfortable, you can go to the Sub Six page and request to join. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Hello Alayne – I found out about your group Sub Six through a blog from another member of 12 x 12 of which I am a member. Do you still have room for the group? I have – (what I think) are 4 manuscripts ready to be submitted. I’ve never joined a critique group – because i’ve been deathly afraid of them – but now have the courage to do so. Do your members critique each other’s work or form small groups for this? I would love to join if this is available – can you let me know? Best – – Beth Halleran
Hi Beth, Congratulations on have four manuscripts that you think are good to go. Great accomplishment! I would love to have you join Sub Six. First, I would like to mention a few things about critique groups. I know it is hard to join a critique group but doing so can be invaluable to a writer. I think if you do join a crit group, it would be a good idea to let them know about your fears. This way, they will have better understanding and start out gently with their comments on your work. However, it will be important to develop a thick skin and learn to figure out what to pay attention to and what to let go from other’s comments about your work. The beauty of a critique group is it is like a dress rehearsal for submitting to editors and agents. It helps to develop the tough skin and coping skills that will be needed when faced with rejections. Of course, there is much more to the crit groups. You will be amazed by what you can learn from other writers and from critiquing other writer’s work. Okay, now, having said all that. Sub Sixers do not critique each others work. Although if someone puts out a request to have their work looked at, there are generally plenty of people who volunteer. In addition, there may be some members who have an opening in their critique group, or we may have enough new members that you can develop a critique group. We can talk some more about this later. So back to Sub Six, I have sent you a FB friend request. If you are comfortable accepting, I can get you added to Sub Six right away. If you would prefer you could go to the Sub Six page https://www.facebook.com/groups/SubSix/ and ask to join, and I will add you to the group. I look forward to sharing our submission goals and successes in this new year. Thanks for contacting me.
